Songs by Nell Balaban
Dilettante is a collection of songs I’ve written and recorded over the last 10 years or so.
I'm excited to share them and will be releasing them
in this space one at a time over the next couple of months. Welcome to week 9!
We could call it a record, an album, or a playlist.
All the tunes were produced and recorded in Canada in various locations; wherever Tim Thorney (the great!) has had his studio, Villa Sound, that’s where I’d go, from Toronto to the lovely Blue Mountains of Ontario.
If you're reading this you've already seen the video for
CROSS THE RIVER.
This was another of the early recordings I did with Tim Thorney and Brent Barkman. And the song is even older-- maybe from Y2K!
But lately I've been into adding a visual component to the songs and I even have a few more videos to come which I'm really excited about sharing here.
The idea for this one came from some footage I shot on my iphone. I was on the ferry to Fire Island last summer and I looked down over the side and became mesmerized by the movement of the water being displaced by the gliding vessel. If you've ever been on any kind of boat you probably know the feeling! So I hit record a few different times and when I looked at the footage later, I just knew I could use it somehow with this tune. I like how it turned out.
p.s.
I ended up making the video in iMovie because my computer was too limited to work in Premiere Pro, which I had been trying to learn. The processing speed and memory issues have since been addressed so I'm hoping to resume my video editing studies soon!
